Push For The Park

If you didn’t know, Cinder Skatepark is run by a Non-Profit organization called The Cinder Project. The Cinder Project has started the Push for the Park campaign to fundraise for our newest skatepark location.

Push for the Park is Cinder’s fundraising campaign to raise support to reopen what was once home to so many- Cinder Skatepark. We were more than just a skatepark to the city of Charlotte and its surrounding suburbs- we were a place for community to be established. We and the local community recognize how great that loss is now that the park has been closed. We see the need to rebuild this skatepark to re-establish the community that was once held together by Cinder. Skaters need a place to call home, and we want to build that home.

The cost to reopen the park is $85,000. Cinder has raised that much in the past, when we originally opened, and we have hope that it can be done again. This time we are seeking support from the community. Individuals, skaters, parents, businesses, churches, and grants are all being pursued to reopen Cinder Skatepark. There are many different ways of getting involved. There are many different ways of giving to the park.

Donating: This can be done directly through the website, facebook, or kickstarter. All three are valid ways of financially supporting the park, and are all ways to receive a tax deduction for your gifts.

Church Support: The Cinder Project is considered a ministry to the skaters and the people of Charlotte. We reach people that would never think about walking through the doors of a church. The Cinder Project is meant to be used as a tool for the Body of Christ. We look to the Body for that support as well. If your church has skater or “issues” with skaters, then connect and partner with The Cinder Project to reach this community.

Community Support: If you have an idea for a fundraiser (yard sale, car wash, bake sale, etc.), we would be more than happy to partner with you or your organization to help facilitate your fundraising event.

The Cinder Project is a faith-based organization that believes in sharing the love and peace of Christ. As Cinders, we simply live our lives full of light that shines on the people that come in contact with us. We love as He loves us.

We share a passion for the skateboarding community. We want to see it grow in this city. We want to see it grow with positive support. We are not just building a place to keep kids off the streets, we are building a place that changes the kids that are on the streets.

Won’t you help us? Won’t you join the cause and give so that Cinder Skatepark can once again be a home?

Cinder Fundraising Shirt

One of Cinder’s newest shirts. This one is special. It is our first of many fundraiser shirts that we will be releasing to help get the park back open in our “Push for the Park” Fundraising Campaign. Cinder sees the need to reopen, and we are diligently working to make that happen. One of the easiest ways you can help us out in this process is supporting us by purchasing a shirt! You get to help and you get Shirt. Doesn’t get better than that!  Just click on the buy now in the sidebar of any Cinder Skatepark page or Cinder Project Page.

Skate Park Update

Hey Everyone,

We just wanted to take a moment to give you an update on what is going on with Cinder Skatepark. We have been working diligently on the reopen. The delay we are experiencing has been very hard on everyone and for that we are deeply sorry. Please know that we are very passionate about what we do. We know that Cinder is like a second home for hundreds of skaters across the greater Charlotte area. Please don’t misconstrue this delay as a lack of desire on our part. Nothing could be further from the truth.

There have been some significant challenges as we try and reopen. We’ve already experienced several major set backs: 1) The commercial real estate industry moves at a snail’s pace. It really is unbelievable how disinterested property owners seem to be regarding renting out their buildings. 2) The price of the buildings. Renting a large enough space to accommodate what we have in mind (a street plaza type layout) is very costly. 3) Donations are down. We’ve been fortunate enough to have many great people and organizations donate small and large sums of money to not only launch the original park, but also help keep the lease paid all these years, the lights on, the staff paid, etc. As you know, the economy has taken a huge hit, which effected us significantly and still does to this day. As most of you know, The Cinder Project is a non-profit organization. No one owns it. We’re not in it for the money. If we were, we would’ve never opened a skatepark/shop. Skateboarding, believe it or not, is not a lucrative business, unless of course you are a large shoe and/or apparel company.

With God’s help, and yours, we’re going to push forward with the goal of opening a park considerably better than the former one. Let’s dream together and be hopeful. This is as much your park as it is ours. Here’s our promise moving forward: we’ll do a lot better job keeping you informed. Keep checking the website for updates.

Thanks for your continued support.

Is Cinder Skatepark going to happen or what?

What the Heck is going on?

Ok, so the rough facts are that we are not going to be able to open the park on our projected day of June 21st. Oh how I would love to be announcing the new location with you guys and showing you 3D mock ups of the new park. Yes, I know there have been “little krews” and the usual “haters” that have been spreading the rumors that we are not going to open. They truly have no clue what they are talking about.  Contrary to their lameness, there is a plan. It has been diverted from the original and is proven to be harder but more exciting to be a part of. For all of you that are our valued friends, customers, and skaters… TRUST.

Challenge number 1: How big do we want our new park?

A common question to ask oneself when dreaming up a new landskate. With all the potentials, this is turning out to be one of the hardest choices to make.  It is simply not as easy as say how big you want and get it.  Now get me on this, there is by far no shortage of spaces to choose from.  I have been through dozens of warehouse walkthroughs, and by frank… I am ready for the right one.  Right now I am narrowing down my choices to the ones that are in the 15,000 to 20,000 sq ft range.

Challenge number 2: Where do we want our new park?

I am not going to move the skatepark into a place where nobody will be able to find us, unless the building is freaking awesome.  I am not even looking at anything south of Carowinds blvd.  So know this, our new location will be considerably closer to all of you who live in Charlotte.  This is not easy, I want a good location for the park.  I expect to be building this place only once!  I want the park to have a home for at least the next ten years.  Charlotte Skateboarding will have a permanent home with Cinder.

Challenge number 3:  How much can we spend?

Yes we could easily move into a smaller yet slightly larger than the past Cinder Skatepark 3 times already.  But, I don’t think that our solution to getting open faster is to compromise by going smaller.  We have been working on private fundraising and grants to open Cinder as a bigger and better skatepark than what you were familiar with in the past.  If I am going to commit the next 10 years of my life to the skaters of Charlotte, then I want to make sure that we can open an incredible skate facility where you won’t have to pay more to skate. That is the key.  We don’t want any of our pricing to go up. So we are taking our time to do it right.  This place is not for my personal gain, it is not to pad my pocket with extra cash, or to buy me a new car.  I am putting all of my efforts into this place so WE have a place where the streets come indoors and we can afford to enjoy an ever changing, ever fresh, ever friendly, always affordable place to skate.   Remember that Cinder is a Not-for- Profit facility. It exists for the skate community.

All these things take time.  Hang in there with us and we will do our best to get back open as soon as possible.  I am putting everything I have into getting Cinder re-opened to the public.

Thanks,
David Tolentino
The Cinder Project lead director
